Hey, friends! Today I’m sharing another FREE Star Wars amigurumi pattern with you – Baby Chewbacca (a.k.a. “Chewy”). This crochet pattern is easy and beginner-friendly! Don’t be intimidated by the fuzzy look! No fuzzy yarn was used; just a pet slicker brush and a little bit of patience.
Baby Chewbacca may be the smallest Wookiee around, but that doesn’t mean he’s not just as strong as the bigger ones. Baby Chewy’s strength lies in his incredible cuteness and ability to charm everyone he interacts with.
If you’d like to make my Baby Yoda pattern as well, check out this post HERE.
Materials You Need To Make This Free Chewbacca Amigurumi Pattern
- Worsted-weight yarn (4-ply) in medium brown, dark brown, and a small amount of gray. (The U.K. equivalent is Aran, and AUS/NZ is 8 ply.) For the medium brown, I used Red Heart Super Saver in “Warm Brown.” Unfortunately, this color has been discontinued. A good substitute would be Red Heart With Love Yarn in “Tan” or Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in “Latte.” For the dark brown, I used Red Heart Soft in “Chocolate.” For the gray, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in “Gray Mist.”
- G (4 mm) crochet hook
- 10.5 mm black safety eyes
- Fiberfill (or your stuffing of choice)
- Bent tip tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch marker
- A small amount of black embroidery floss
- Dog slicker brush

Important Additional Info
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. If you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.

R8-17: sc in all 42 sts (10 rounds total—42 sts)
R18: in BLO (back loops only) sc 42 (42 sts) (this is the only round we will crochet in the BLO)

R21: *sc 3, dec* rep 6 times (24 sts)
How to Make the Yarn Fuzzy
Take your pet or amigurumi brush (pic. #2) and brush the head vigorously.
The more you brush the yarn out, the fluffier it will be. This will take some time, but it’s worth it! For an example of how to brush, see this video HERE. We brush out the head before we insert the safety eyes so that we don’t scratch the eyes with the brush, so be sure to finish brushing it before moving on to the face.
Once satisfied, insert your safety eyes between R15 & 16, 8 sts apart. (Hint: insert the 1st eye. Count 8 sts from the hole where you inserted the 1st eye and insert the 2nd eye.)
Now, embroider a small mouth using black embroidery floss or sport-weight yarn about 2 sts wide right between his eyes (see pic. #6).
Start stuffing the head, continuing to stuff until you have closed up the head. Do not stuff the bottom of the head too firmly if you want it to remain flat like mine.
R22: *sc 2, dec* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R23: *sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R24: *dec* rep 6 times (6 sts)
Finish off and weave the tail into the head. Finish brushing out the bottom of the head until you are satisfied with it.
Legs (make 2 using medium brown yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2: *sc 1, inc* rep 3 times (9 sts)
R3: in BLO sc in all 9 sts (9 sts) (this is the last round we will crochet in the BLO)
R4: sc in all 9 sts (9 sts)
Finish off on the first leg. Do NOT finish off or cut the yarn on the 2nd leg; instead, ch 1
We will now join the legs together and start making the body. The left leg is the one we finished off on, and the right leg is the one still attached to the yarn that we did not finish off. (From the doll’s perspective.)
Body (continuing in medium brown yarn)
R5: Join the right leg to the left leg with a sc in the first st of the left leg. Now sc 8 into the remaining sts on the left leg.
Sc 1 into the front loops of the ch st between the legs (this is the chain stitch we made after the last round of the right leg. See the first 2 images in the collage picture below). Now, we are crocheting on the right leg (see the last 2 images in the collage picture below).
Sc 9 into the sts on the right leg, sc 1 in the back loops of the ch st (20 sts)
See the collage picture below to see the legs fully joined together.
(See this video here for help with joining the legs together HERE.)
R6-11: sc in all 20 sts (6 rounds total—20 sts)
R12: *sc 3, dec* rep 4 times (16 sts)
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing.
Take your brush and brush the body vigorously until it is fluffy to your satisfaction.
Stuff the body firmly and sew it to the bottom center of the head. To keep the body from shifting while sewing, pin it to the head first using straight pins.
Once the body is sewn on, you can remove the straight pins.
Arms (make 2 using medium brown yarn)
R1: ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2-5: sc in all 5 sts (4 rounds total—5 sts)
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing (see pic. #16.).
Do not stuff the arms. Brush the arms out with your pet brush. To make it easier, place the arms on a wooden chopstick (the back of a crochet hook would work, too) and brush the arms there to save your fingers from getting torn up.
Now sew the open ends closed using the whipstitch. To see how to do this, watch this video HERE.
Now sew the arms to the sides of the body, just under the head. The arms should line up evenly with the legs.
Belt (using dark brown yarn)
R1: ch 32, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 31, ch 1, turn (31 sts)
R2: sc 31 (31 sts)
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing. We will now embroider the details on the belt. To do this, take some light gray yarn and embroider straight, vertical stitches over the belt. Weave in the ends.
Once finished, sew the two short ends together.
If you want the belt to be removable like mine, don’t sew it to your Chewy. Otherwise, using the remaining yarn tail, attach the belt to his left shoulder with a few stitches. Weave in all ends.
