Hey, crafty friends! I’m so excited to share my popular Baby Yoda amigurumi crochet pattern for FREE here on my blog. This pattern has been available as a premium pattern in my shop for several years, but with Star Wars Day (a.k.a. May the 4th) coming up, I wanted to surprise you with this free version!
“When 900 years old you reach, look as good, you will not.” I think we can all agree that Yoda never looked as good as he does in this cute and tiny amigurumi form! Baby Yoda is ready to be your companion; you’ll never be without wise advice while he’s around!
If you’d like to make my FREE Baby Chewbacca pattern as well, check out this post HERE.

Important Additional Info
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. If you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi turn out slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.

Head (using green yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts) (you can use the magic circle if you prefer as it won’t make a difference in the end. If you want to know how to start using the “ch 2 method” that I use, watch this video HERE.)
R2: *inc* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *sc 2, inc* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6-12: sc in all 30 sts (7 rounds total—30 sts)
R13: *sc 3, dec* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R14: *sc 2, dec* rep 6 times (18 sts)
Insert your safety eyes between R11 and 12, 7 sts apart. (Hint: Insert the first eye. Count 7 sts from the hole where you inserted the first eye and insert the second eye.) Now, embroider a small mouth using your black embroidery floss right between his eyes, about 1.5 sts wide. Watch this video HERE to see how I embroidered my smile.
Start to stuff the head firmly continuing to stuff as you work.
R15: *sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R16: *dec* rep 6 times (6 sts)
Finish off. Finish stuffing the head firmly, and use the tail to sew up the hole neatly.
Body (starting with green yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2: *inc* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: in BLO (back loops only) *Sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts) (This is the only round we will crochet in the BLO until R5a.)
Switch to brown yarn
R5a: in the BLO (back loops only) very loosely slip stitch in all 12 sts (12 sts)
R5: in the BLO (back loops only) *Sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts) (This is the last round we will crochet in the BLO.)
This is a special way of changing colors so that there is a neat, clean edge all around. The slip stitch round (R5a) does not add any height to the round and is just the foundation for the next round (R5), so we get the clean edge from the bottom loops of the slip stitches. For help with this, see this video HERE. If you wish to make a traditional color change, disregard R5a.
R6-7: sc in all 18 sts (2 rounds total—18 sts)
R8: *sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts)
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff firmly and sew to the head using the whipstitch. When finished, make a knot to secure your sewing and weave the remaining tail into the body to hide the end.
Ears (using green yarn)
Ch 6, make 1 dc and 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, make 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, sl st in the last ch, turn your work 180 degrees and in the front loops of the chain, sl st 1 in the 1st ch, make 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, make 1 hdc and 1 dc in the last ch
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing. Pull the starting tail tight so the tip of his ear is pointy. Sew to either side of his head over R8-11 approx. Weave in all ends.
Coat (using cream yarn)
The coat is worked in rows rather than rounds, so we will ch 1 and turn at the end of each round.
Start with a long tail. We will use this later to sew the coat to the body.
R1: ch 20, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 19 (19 sts), ch 1, turn
R2-5: sc in all 19 sts (19 sts), ch 1, turn (4 rounds total)
Now, we will crochet a border all around the coat. Starting on the short end nearest you, sc 4, on the long end, dec 1, sc 1 in each of the next 15 sts, dec 1, on the 2nd short end, sc 4
Finish off. Sew the coat’s top round to the body’s top round. Weave in all ends.
Arms (make 2 using cream yarn)
Ch 3, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 2, turn your work 180 degrees and in the front loops of the chain, sl st 2
Finish off by leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the arms to either side of the body just under the head. Weave in all ends.
