I’m excited to share this free mushroom amigurumi pattern with you today! Many years ago, I designed this mushroom as an exclusive pattern for a crochet club monthly subscription box. Now, I’m happy to share this cuddle-sized pattern with you for free!
Meet Aidan the Mushroom! Aidan is a lovable little guy! Thankfully for you, he is not of the poisonous variety, so he’s perfectly safe to have around, and smothering him with kisses won’t cause you any harm!

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFO
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. If you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.

Bottom part of the head (using red yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts) (you can use the magic circle if you prefer as it won’t make a difference in the end. If you want to know how to start using the “ch 2 method” that I use, watch this video here HERE)

R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)

Finish off. No need to leave a long tail. Set aside until the top is completed.
Top of head (using red yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
R2: *inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *sc 2, inc 1* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc 1* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6: *sc 4, inc 1* rep 6 times (36 sts)
R7: *sc 5, inc 1* rep 6 times (42 sts)
R8: *sc 6, inc 1* rep 6 times (48 sts)
R9: *sc 7, inc 1* rep 6 times (54 sts)
R10: *sc 8, inc 1* rep 6 times (60 sts)
R11: *sc 9, inc 1* rep 6 times (66 sts)
R12: *sc 10, inc 1* rep 6 times (72 sts)
R13-15: sc in all 72 sts (3 rounds total at 72 sts each)
R16: *sc 11, inc 1* rep 6 times (78 sts)
R17-20: sc in all 78 sts (4 rounds total at 78 sts each)
R21: *sc 12, inc 1* rep 6 times (84 sts)
R22-26: sc in all 84 sts (5 rounds total at 84 sts each)
R27: *sc 13, inc 1* rep 6 times (90 sts)
Do NOT finish off. First, insert your safety eyes between R25 & 26 of the head, 13 sts apart. (Hint: insert the 1st eye. Count 13 sts from the hole where you inserted the 1st eye and insert the 2nd eye.)
Finishing the Head
We will now join the bottom and top by single crocheting them together. Join the top and bottom pieces together with single crochet stitches going through the front and back loops of both pieces. They should align perfectly since there are 90 sts around on both the top and bottom.
Start stuffing the head as you crochet around. To make the bottom of the mushroom’s head nice and flat, we will cut out a cardboard circle the same diameter as the bottom piece. When you are about halfway around joining the two pieces together, slip the cardboard in. Keep stuffing the head (underneath the cardboard piece) until it’s all closed up.
Spots (make 3 using cream yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
R2: *inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *sc 1, inc 1, sc 1* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc 1* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6: *sc 1, inc 1, sc 3* rep 6 times (36 sts)
Finish off neatly using the invisible finish technique HERE. Pin the spots onto the head with straight pins. You can place the spots wherever you like, and you can also add extra spots if you want. When you are ready to sew them on, sew them to the head using the invisible seam method HERE.
Stem (using cream yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
R2: *inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *sc 2, inc 1* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc 1* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6: *sc 4, inc 1* rep 6 times (36 sts)
R7: *sc 5, inc 1* rep 6 times (42 sts)
R8: *sc 6, inc 1* rep 6 times (48 sts)
R9: *sc 7, inc 1* rep 6 times (54 sts)
R10: In BLO *sc 7, dec 1* rep 6 times (48 sts). This is the only round you will crochet in the back loops
R11-19: sc in all 48 sts (9 rounds total at 48 sts each)
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Like we did for the head, add a circle of cardboard to the bottom of the stem. This will give it a flat bottom and help add stability so that your mushroom can stand up on its own. Stuff the stem firmly. Position the stem so that it’s centered under the mushroom’s head, and pin it into place using straight pins. Since there is cardboard in the way, you will have to put the pins in sideways so that they stay put. Sew the stem to the head using the whipstitch.
Arms (make 2 using cream yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
R2: *inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: sc in all 12 sts (12 sts)
Flatten the arm. Going through both the front and back loops of the stitches, single crochet the arms closed (see picture below). This will create a flat edge on the arms for us to sew them to the stem. Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Using the whipstitch, sew the arms to either side of the head, right under the neck. When you are finished, make a knot to secure the sewing and weave the remaining tails into the stem to finish.
Heart (using red yarn)
R1: ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook (8 sts)
R2: sl st 2, hdc 1, 2 dc & 1 sl st in the next sc, 1 sl st & 2 dc in the next sc, hdc 1, sl st 2
Finish off with a sl st and a ch, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the heart to the bottom back of the stem using the invisible seam method HERE.
