It’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than two weeks away! I couldn’t let this season pass without releasing at least one brand-new design for you all. Last year, I shared the patterns for my Mini Retro Christmas Ball Ornament and my Free Vintage Christmas Bauble Ornament. This year, I’m excited to share the giant plush version of the Christmas ball ornament design! This pattern is an easy NO-SEW project, and it’s easy to customize the colors and details.

A girl sits in front of a Christmas tree holding three large, plush crocheted Christmas ornaments.

While these giant ornaments might never be able to hang from your Christmas tree, they are just as content to lounge around your couch or under your tree this Christmas. Your giant ornament needs a plush friend to hang out with, so be sure to make at least two of these cuties!

Three large amigurumi Christmas ornaments sit in a blanket-lined basket. A Christmas tree is in the background.

Important Additional Info

Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. Watch this short video to learn how to make the “ch 2 method”.

Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. Watch my short video to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches.

Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. Watch my video on the differences between yarn under and yarn over.

Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.

Stuffing: Check out my short video on how to stuff pieces properly here.

Color changes: Insert hook into last st of round or section with old color, yarn over & pull hook through st. Take your new color of yarn, yarn over & pull hook through remaining 2 loops on hook. Now you’re ready to start the new round or section. Check out my video on color changes here.

No-Sew Giant Plush Amigurumi Christmas Ornament Pattern

Ornament (Starting in Your Main Color)

We are starting at the bottom of the ornament. We will stagger the increases for the first 14 rounds to create a nicely rounded bottom. I’ve written out exactly how to do this here.

R1: ch 2, starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 8 (8 sts)

R2: *inc* rep 8 times (16 sts)

R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 8 times (24 sts)

R4: *sc 3, inc* rep 6 times (30 sts)

R5: sc 1, inc, *sc 4, inc* rep 5 times, sc 3 (36 sts)

R6: sc 3, inc, *sc 5, inc* rep 5 times, sc 2 (42 sts)

R7: sc 5, inc, *sc 6, inc* rep 5 times, sc 1 (48 sts)

R8: sc 2, inc, *sc 7, inc* rep 5 times, sc 5 (54 sts)

R9: sc 5, inc, *sc 8, inc* rep 5 times, sc 3 (60 sts)

R10: sc 4, inc, *sc 9, inc* rep 5 times, sc 5 (66 sts)

R11: sc 8, inc, *sc 10, inc* rep 5 times, sc 2 (72 sts)

R12: *sc 11, inc* rep 6 times (78 sts)

R13: sc 6, inc, *sc 12, inc* rep 5 times, sc 6 (84 sts)

R14: sc 11, inc, *sc 13, inc* rep 5 times, sc 2 (90 sts)

R15: sc in all 90 sts (90 sts)

Switch to secondary yarn color. Watch this video to learn how to neatly switch colors.

R16-17: sc in all 90 sts (2 rounds total at 90 sts each)

Switch to main yarn color, but do not cut the secondary yarn; leave it attached, as we will be switching between the two colors throughout the pattern. When you are done using one color, just leave the tail hanging and then pick it back up when you are ready to use it again. It’s easier to do this than to have to cut and knot the yarn each time.

R18-20: Sc in all 90 sts (3 rounds total at 90 sts each) (see pic. #1)

Switch to secondary yarn color. For help with R21, watch this video HERE.

R21: *sc 2, now insert your hook in between the 2 sc sts 3 rounds below the round we’re currently on and make a sc* rep 30 times (90 sts) (see pic. #2)

Switch to main yarn color

R24-29: sc in all 90 sts (6 rounds total at 90 sts each)

In the next two rounds, you’ll be switching between the secondary color and the main color every few stitches.

R30: in main color sc 3, *in second color sc 1, in main color sc 4* rep 17 times, in second color sc 1, in main color sc 1 (90 sts) (see pics. #4 and #5. Pic. #5 shows the backside of the stitches and how we are carrying the yarn.)

R32-33: sc in all 90 sts (2 rounds total at 90 sts each)

Just like we did with the increases, we will be staggering our decreases in the following rounds.

R34: *sc 13, dec* rep 6 times (84 sts)

Switch to secondary yarn color

R35: sc 8, dec, *sc 12, dec* rep 5 times, sc 4 (78 sts)

Switch to main yarn color

R36: sc 5, dec, *sc 11, dec* rep 5 times, sc 6 (72 sts) (see pic. #8)

R37: sc 9, dec, *sc 10, dec* rep 5 times, sc 1 (66 sts)

R38: sc 6, dec, *sc 9, dec* rep 5 times, sc 3 (60 sts)

Switch to secondary yarn color

R39: *sc 8, dec* rep 6 times (54 sts)

Making the Face

Insert your 18 mm safety eyes between R26 & 27 of the head spaced 12 sts apart (Hint: Insert the 1st eye. Count 12 sts from the hole where you inserted the 1st eye and insert the 2nd eye. There should be 9 visible sts between the two eyes. See pic. #9).

A partially crocheted amigurumi ornament is shown from the front. Two plastic safety eyes are placed on the front of the ornament.
Pic. #9

Using your black worsted-weight yarn and tapestry needle, embroider a smile centered between the eyes over R26 of the head (see pic. #10). The smile should be about 3 sc sts wide. Watch this video to learn how to embroider an easy, simple smile.

Take some white or cream yarn and make a stitch over the outer edge of each eye (see pic. #11).

Start to stuff the ornament. Take your time with this step and focus on keeping the rounded shape. I stuffed mine very firmly.

R40: sc 4, dec, *sc 7, dec* rep 5 times, sc 3 (48 sts)

Switch to main yarn color

R41: sc 5, dec, *sc 6, dec* rep 5 times, sc 1 (42 sts)

R42: sc 3, dec, *sc 5, dec* rep 5 times, sc 2 (36 sts)

R43: *sc 4, dec* rep 6 times (30 sts)

Switch to yellow yarn

Ornament Top (using yellow/gold or silver/gray yarn)

R44: in BLO (back loops only) sc in all 30 sts (30 sts). This is the only round we will crochet in the BLO until R49 (see pic. #12).

R45-48: sc in all 30 sts (4 rounds total at 30 sts each)

R49: in BLO *sc 3, dec* rep 6 times (24 sts). This is the last round we will crochet in the BLO.

R50: *sc 2, dec* rep 6 times (18 sts)

Remember to continue stuffing your ornament until it is closed up. I didn’t stuff the top of the ornament as firmly as the bottom.

R51: *sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts)

R52: *dec* rep 6 times (6 sts)

Finish off and neatly sew the hole closed using your tapestry needle. Watch this video to learn how to neatly sew a hole closed. (see pics. #13-#16).

Ornament loop (using yellow/gold or silver/gray yarn)

Watch this video to see how I made the ornament loop, step-by-step.

Insert your hook under the last round of the ornament top and join your yarn to the round with a sl st (see pic. #17). Now ch 15 (see first image in pic. #18). Insert your hook into the opposite side of the last round and make a sl st to complete the loop (see 2nd and 3rd image in pic. #18).

Finish off and weave the yarn tail over to where the starting yarn tail is (see last image in pic. #18). Knot the two ends together to secure the loop, and then weave the remaining tails into the ornament to hide them.

Congratulations—you’re done! I hope you enjoyed making this no-sew plush Christmas ornament amigurumi pattern. I would love to see pictures of your finished project!
