I’m excited to share another FREE crochet pattern with you this week! This jellyfish amigurumi pattern is so easy to make and requires almost no sewing! I’ve also recorded a step-by-step video tutorial to accompany this pattern.
This jellyfish amigurumi pattern is perfect for beginners because of the perfect size (not too big and not too small) and the minimal amount of sewing required. This pattern can be made into so many different color combos. I went with a Little Mermaid color scheme for my jellyfish.
Another reason this jellyfish amigurumi pattern is perfect for beginners is that I created a crochet kit with all the materials and supplies you need to make it! You can find out more about this crochet kit on my website HERE.
If you’d like to support my work, you can purchase the ad-free PDF version of this free jellyfish amigurumi pattern in my premium pattern shop HERE.
Meet Mochi, the Jellyfish! Mochi enjoys floating along in the beautiful, clear ocean, especially at night when she can see the twinkling stars above her. Mochi loves being near her family and friends, so be sure to make a whole smack of cute jellyfish!

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFO
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. If you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.
Mochi the Jellyfish Amigurumi Pattern
Jellyfish bottom (using mint green yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (you can use the magic circle if you prefer as it won’t make a difference in the end. If you want to know how to start using the “ch 2 method” that I use, watch this video here HERE)
R2: *inc* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *inc, sc 2* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6: sc 2, inc, *sc 4, inc* rep 5 times, sc 2 (36 sts)
R7: *sc 5, inc* rep 6 times (42 sts)
Finish off. No need to leave a long tail. Set aside until we have made the tentacles.
Middle curly tentacles (make 3 using light green yarn)
Make sure your starting tail is not too short; we will use it later to tie the tentacles to the jellyfish bottom.
Ch 23, starting in 2nd ch from hook, inc 1 in each of the 22 sts (44 sts)
Finish off leaving a tail for sewing. With your tapestry needle, pull one of the tail pieces up through the center of the jellyfish bottom piece we had set aside. Now take the other tail piece and pull it up through the bottom piece as well, one stitch away from the first tail you pulled through.
Now, tie the two tails together to secure them and cut the yarn.
The knots don’t have to be neat since they will not be visible once we crochet the top and bottom together (see pic. #5).
Repeat this for the other two tentacles. All three tentacles should be spaced evenly around the first round of the bottom piece.
Outside tentacles (make 8 using mint green yarn)
Make sure your starting tail is not too short. We will use it later to tie the tentacles to the jellyfish’s bottom.
Ch 19, starting in 2nd ch from hook, inc 1 in each of the next 5 ch sts, now make 1 sl st in each of the remaining 13 chs (23 sts)
Finish off by leaving a tail for sewing (see pic. #8).
Like we did for the curly tentacles, we will pull the two tails up through the jellyfish bottom piece and tie them together.
Make sure the two tails are a stitch apart from each other. Knot the tails together and cut excess yarn (see pic. #11).
Space the 8 tentacles evenly around the bottom piece between the last two rounds of the bottom piece. Each tentacle will be spaced about 2-3 sts apart (see pic. #12). (Hint: I tied two tentacles directly across each other in a parallel line. Then I tied two more tentacles across from each other in a parallel line so that the four tentacles now attached are in a sort of square shape. Then I filled in the remaining spaces with the four remaining tentacles.)
Flower detail (using purple yarn)
R1: *ch 4, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 3* rep 5 times. There should be 5 “petals” by the time you are finished. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the two ends together to create the flower. Do not cut the tails yet. Set aside until we make the jellyfish top.
Jellyfish top (using mint green yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2: *inc* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *inc, sc 2* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6: sc 2, inc, *sc 4, inc* rep 5 times, sc2 (36 sts)
R7: *sc 5, inc* rep 6 times (42 sts)
R8-9: sc in all 42 sts (2 rounds total—42 sts)
R10: *sc 6, inc* rep 6 times 48 sts)
R11-14: sc in all 48 sts (4 rounds total—48 sts)
R15: *sc 6, dec* rep 6 times (42 sts)
Do not finish off. Insert your safety eyes between R13 & 14 spaced 8 sts apart (Hint: insert the 1st eye. Count 8 sts from the hole where you inserted the 1st eye and insert the 2nd eye.)
Using some embroidery floss, embroider a small smile right between the eyes about 2 sts wide. To learn how to make your smile, watch this video HERE. Now take some pink yarn and embroider her little cheeks one round below and about one stitch away from the eyes. Make 2 straight sts about 2 sts wide. Repeat on the other side for the 2nd cheek.
Take some white yarn and embroider a small stitch over the outer top corners of the eyes.
Final Assembly for our Jellyfish Amigurumi
Now, sew the star flower to the side of her head. I sewed mine to R7 or 8 of the head approx.
Weave all tails into the inside of the head and knot together to secure.
Now, we will crochet the top of the head to the bottom of the head. These two pieces will line up perfectly since there are 42 sts on the top and 42 sts on the bottom. Holding your jellyfish upside down, start by placing the two pieces together and insert your hook into the next stitch on the top and then into the first stitch of the bottom piece. Make a sc st. Continue crocheting the pieces together until you are about halfway through (see pic. #21).
Stop and start stuffing lightly. Continue stuffing a little bit at a time as you close up your jellyfish.
Finish off neatly using the invisible finish. You can find a video demonstrating this technique HERE.
