Today, I am sharing a crochet pattern with you that is very near and dear to my heart: Cooper the Rooster! This pattern was the first published pattern that I offered on my Etsy shop, and it got me started selling patterns instead of finished items. I’m now happy to share this free rooster amigurumi pattern with you here on my blog.
Cooper is part of my mini farm animal series, and you can find my baby lamb pattern HERE.
Meet Cooper, the cutest (and certainly the most huggable) rooster in the coop! Cooper is a little shy but still loves spending time with his friends and family! This pattern is beginner-friendly and easy enough to whip up in an hour or less.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFO For Free Rooster Amigurumi Pattern
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. If you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.
Free Rooster Amigurumi Pattern
Head (using yellow yarn)
R1: ch 2, make 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (6 sts) (you can use the magic circle if you prefer as it won’t make a difference in the end. If you want to know how to start using the “ch 2 method” that I use, watch this video here HERE)
R2: *inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: *sc 2, inc 1* rep 6 times (24 sts)
R5: *sc 3, inc 1* rep 6 times (30 sts)
R6-11: sc in all 30 sts (6 rounds total at 30 sts each)
R12: *sc 3, dec 1* rep 6 times (24 sts)
Stop and insert your 7.5 mm eyes between R10 and 11 of the head, spaced about 6 sts apart (hint: insert the first eye. Count 6 sts from the hole where you inserted the first eye and insert the second eye).

R13: *sc 2, dec 1* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R14: *sc 1, dec 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
Stop and begin stuffing the head, continuing to stuff as you crochet.
R15: *dec 1* rep 6 times (6 sts)
Finish off. Finish stuffing the head firmly and use the tail to sew up the hole, then weave in your end.

Beak (using orange yarn)
R1: ch 2, make 4 sc sts in the 2nd ch from the hook (4 sts)
R2: sc 4 (4 sts)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Position the beak centered between the eyes and pin it into place with straight pins so that it doesn’t shift around while you are sewing it on. Sew the beak to the head using the whipstitch.

Comb (using red yarn)
Loosely ch 10, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc 1, *3 dc in next ch, sl st 1* rep 3 times, 3 dc in next ch, sc 1 in last ch

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin the comb into place using straight pins. The front of the comb should be sewn onto R5 of the front of the head and stretched back to R5 of the back of the head. Sew the bottom of the comb to the head. When you are finished, make a knot to secure and weave the remaining yarn tails into the head.

Large wattle (using red yarn)
Ch 3, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sl st in each of the 2 chs (2 sts)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Set aside until we make the small wattle.
Small wattle (using red yarn)
Ch 2, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st 1 (1 st)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the large wattle underneath the beak, to the left of the beak (the rooster’s left). Sew the small wattle right next to the large one.

Body (using black yarn)
R1: ch 2, make 5 sc sts in the 2nd ch from the hook (5 sts)
R2: *inc 1* rep 5 times (10 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc 1* rep 5 times (15 sts)
R4-6: 1 sc in each sc around (3 rounds total)
Switch to yellow yarn
R7: 1 sc in each sc around (15 sts)
R8: *Sc 1, dec 1* rep 5 times (10 sts)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff firmly and pin the body to the bottom center of the head using straight pins. Sew it to the head using the long tail we left and your tapestry needle.

Wings (make 2 using yellow yarn)
Ch 2, make 6 sc sts in the 2nd ch from hook (6 sts)
Ch 1 to finish off. Sew the flat edge of the wings to the body. Sew the wings to either side of the body, directly under the head.

Legs (make 2 using orange yarn)
Leave a long starting tail for his right leg; you’ll need this later to sew his leg on.
Ch 4, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sl st in each of the 3 chs (3 sts)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the back of the legs over R3 and 4 of the body, then bring your yarn to the top edge of the leg and sew down a couple of the stitches of the leg to R4 of the body. When you are finished, weave both the sewing tail and the starting tail to the back of the body so that both tails come out of the same stitch. Knot the two ends together, then weave the remaining tails into the body to finish.

Tail feathers (using green yarn)
*Ch 5, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sl st in each of the 4 chs* rep this sequence 4 times. When you’re done, you should have 4 tail feathers.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the tail feathers to the back of the body on R3.
