Meet Jack the Pumpkin! Jack has been waiting all summer for the moment when he would be picked from his pumpkin patch in the fall and taken to a new home. The time has finally come, and Jack can’t wait to meet his new family!

MATERIALS YOU NEED
- To start, you’ll need worsted-weight yarn (4-ply) in orange, green, and a small amount of black for the mouth. (The U.K. equivalent is Aran, and AUS/NZ is 8 ply.) Since I designed my pumpkin several years ago, I don’t remember what brand of yarn I used for the orange. However, Red Heart Super Saver in the color “Carrot” is an excellent option if you want a burnt orange color. For a bright orange, Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in the color “Blood Orange” is a great option. For the green stem and vines, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in the color “Mid Green”.
- G (4 mm) crochet hook
- 15 mm black safety eyes
- Fiberfill (or your stuffing of choice)
- Bent tip tapestry needle
- Extra-long (5 inch) tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch marker

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFO
Starting round: When starting my crochet pieces in the round, I always use the “ch 2 method.” That is perfectly fine if you prefer to start your pieces using the magic circle/ring instead. These two methods are interchangeable, and the end result will be the same regardless of your choice. However, if you would like to learn how to do the “ch 2 method,” then see this video HERE.
Right vs. wrong side: When working in the round, I always crochet with the “right” side of the stitches facing out. If you’d like to see the difference between the “right” and “wrong” side of crochet stitches, see this video HERE.
Yarn under vs. yarn over: I always yarn under (YU) instead of yarn over (YO) for all my amigurumi. Doing YO might make your amigurumi slightly larger than mine, so keep that in mind if you prefer YO. If you want more info on this, check out this short video HERE.
Sewing pieces together: I sew all my pieces together using the whipstitch unless otherwise specified.
Stuffing: If you need help stuffing your pieces properly, check out this short video HERE.

Finish off leaving a very long tail, about 13 inches long. Sew up the hole neatly using this technique HERE.
Making the Ridges
Using your extra-long tapestry needle, take the long tail and bring it to the top of the pumpkin, pulling tightly. Now go over one stitch and bring your needle and tail back down to the bottom of the pumpkin, again, pulling tightly. Your pumpkin now has an indented top and bottom.
Now, take the same tail and bring it up over the front of the face, right up against the side of the left cheek. Pull tightly so that it’s indented. You probably won’t have enough yarn left for the other side, so go ahead and secure the tail to the top of the pumpkin. Make sure that any knots or ends are on the top of the pumpkin and not the bottom since the top of the pumpkin will be covered up later with the stem.
Take another really long tail and, securing the end to the top of the pumpkin, indent the other side of his face beside the right cheek. Then, indent right between the eyes. Add five more ridges around the pumpkin making sure to evenly space them, pulling tightly on each one after each new ridge. (Note: You may end up with more or less ridges depending on how you wish to space them.)
Last of all, embroider his smile on right between his eyes with black yarn, making it about 4 sts wide. See how I embroider a simple smile HERE.
Stem & Vines (using green yarn)
R1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2: *inc* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3: *sc 1, inc* rep 6 times (18 sts)
R4: in BLO *sc 1, dec* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R5-7: sc in all 12 sts (3 rounds total—12 sts)
R8: in FLO *inc* rep 12 times (24 sts)
Do NOT finish off until we have made the vines.
Loosely ch 16, starting in 2nd ch from hook, make 2 sc in each ch (30 sts)
Make a sl st into the last sc you made on R8.
Loosley ch 26, starting in 2nd ch from hook, make 2 sc in each ch (50 sts)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Last of all, stuff the stem firmly and sew it to the top of the pumpkin.
